Mars in the first decan of Scorpio follows the Golden Dawn attribution; Book T titles the card Loss in Pleasure. Waite's published meanings, checked against the Pictorial Key, give a loss with something remaining over, and inheritance or marriage not corresponding to expectations . disappointment rather than bereavement. The modern grief reading is largely an interpretation of the Smith imagery and is defensible, but it is narrower than the baseline. UTT keeps the wider sense and names bereavement as the heaviest case rather than the definition.
