Upright
The Eight of Swords describes real restrictions alongside beliefs about what is possible. Both deserve attention. Questioning an assumption does not make the practical restriction disappear.
Reversed
Ways to understand the reversed card: Something is easing or being let go Something is being overdone
Something is easing or being let go: A restriction has been examined and some room for action has become apparent.
Something is being overdone: The description of what is impossible has grown wider than the obstacles that can actually be identified.

- Reversed
- Ask what you can safely verify about one specific limitation rather than judging the whole situation at once.

Common misreadings
- The card does not mean the problem is imaginary, that you caused it or that you can simply choose your way out.
- Real restrictions remain real. The card does not make them your fault or establish that you can escape them.
- Use the facts of the situation to choose an interpretation. The card alone does not establish what is happening.

Lineage: golden-dawn-rws · attribution confidence: traditional
Jupiter in the first decan of Gemini follows the Golden Dawn attribution; Book T titles the card Shortened Force. Waite's published meanings, checked against the Pictorial Key, give bad news, violent chagrin, crisis, censure, power in trammels, conflict, calumny and also sickness, with the qualification that the card is one of restraint rather than irretrievable bondage. UTT keeps the qualification and declines the sickness reading on scope grounds, since it is a health claim this platform does not make.
