Upright
The Eight of Cups describes walking away from something that may still function but no longer feels worthwhile. A situation does not have to be a failure for your reasons for staying to change.
Reversed
Ways to understand the reversed card: Something prevents action Something is happening privately
Something prevents action: A practical responsibility, dependency or other constraint prevents a departure you want to make.

Common misreadings
- The card does not decide whether you should leave a job, relationship or other commitment.

Memory hook
Considering leaving something that no longer matters to you.
Practice
Write a short example of a situation where this meaning could be useful. Ask what has changed for you and what leaving would involve. You do not need to invent a fault in the situation to examine your own reasons.
Historical sources and editorial notes
Lineage: golden-dawn-rws · attribution confidence: traditional
Saturn in the first decan of Pisces follows the Golden Dawn attribution; Book T titles the card Abandoned Success. Waite's published meanings, checked against the Pictorial Key, give a figure deserting the cups of his felicity and the decline of a matter, or a matter thought important proving of slight consequence. UTT reads a deliberate departure from something intact, which follows the imagery closely. Waite's reversal gives great joy, happiness and feasting, a reversal this deck does not carry because it names an outcome.
